Mixed Media Monthly for February on Saturday 28/02/26

£40.00 Sold out

Starting in 2026 . . . a series of workshops on Saturday mornings - 1 per month - to explore mixed media art making.
Come one time to try it out or book a bunch of sessions.

Across the sessions this will include:
- creating our own tools from found and recycled materials, then use them to explore mark making
- creating a vocabulary of marks to use in art making (inc discovering your preferences for types of marks e.g. wild and free or tight and controlled)
- exploring a wide range of materials on their own and in combination; creating layered works
- exploring possible thematic approaches to mixed media work e.g. lettering or botanical or abstract or other
- as well as creating finished pieces there are additional options for creating different outcomes each session including artists books or paper weavings from the mixed media work

IN FEBRUARY our big focus in is on creating layered work with lots of different media involved.
We'll learn about sgraffito - scratching back through layers to reveal contrasting marks and layers beneath.
I'll offer a range of outcomes including paper weaving . . . or you can take the modelled input and as ever go your own way!
The images shown are from a similar online course I taught recently - examples of student work and of a sgraffito effect.

No previous art making experience is needed - just a dose of curiosity and a willingness to explore.
For artists, this practice is invaluable if you're keen to explore some new ways of making marks and or if you like to play with materials just for their own sake!

Comments from recent course participants (from the online mixed media course) :
‘Thank you, Julia, and thanks especially for sharing your process. I love the idea of using a specific type of ‘mark’ as a launch point throughout an entire sketchbook, and I’m looking forward to playing with the various techniques you shared again and again. Very useful and inspiring session!' Kerry
'Julia, I enjoyed your lesson! Your tips were beneficial and will help me loosen up within a structure. Thank you for sharing your ideas about how to make a composition look like it flows (not separate elements).' Sarah
'Thank you. I'm going to have another play this afternoon. It's very inspiring and just what I need to propel me into my creativity again,' Catherine.
'I haven't done much in sketchbooks, but I do like your idea of exploring a single shape to the fullest. This is worth working in a sketchbook to me!' Karen
