What?
This engaging, fun, hands-on 5 part course will develop your skills in Gelliprinting (monoprinting on a Gelli plate without a press). It's suitable for beginners or those wishing to go deeper with their Gelliprinting skills.
We'll look at examples of work from various artists as spring boards, using them as inspiration for our printmaking explorations. A week by week list of artists and linked skills is provided nearer the time but will include Jim Dine for pop art vibes and Mary Delany for beautiful botanicals.
We'll learn to explore aspects of their works and practice, adapting it to print making and creating our own unique works.
Each week we'll learn new skills to work with in our mono printmaking; each new skill is modelled comprehensively and then 1:1 support is offered as you begin to explore.
Worked examples from the teachers own workbook are also shared, as are other sketchbooks for inspiration.
You will be emailed each week with inspirational images and other supplementary materials and information e.g. if there's an interesting programme to watch about the artist for the next week - it's not homework, just for those interested!
Week 1: Jim Dine (heart series) / Andy Warhol (flower series) for Pop Art vibes - take one 'symbol' (shape) and find out how many ways it can be printed using skills including image transfer, building textured backgrounds, changing the scale or position of the symbol and other. Develop your preferences as you go.
Details for other weeks coming soon.
Week 2: Mary Delany for beautiful textured botanical vibes - take a favourite flower or abstract shape if flowers are not your thing (taking inspiration from Rex Ray)
We'll explore a wide range of ways of building up textured backgrounds using different tones of one or 2 colours and materials including watercolour paints and metallic powders, pastel pencils and more.
We'll build a rich layered background, and then cut and collage flower parts or abstract shapes to create our own unique collages.
Weeks 3-5 coming soon.
You will be provided with a sketchbook in which to chart your learning through the 5 weeks and at the end of each week you will take home the prints you've made from that week's inspiration.
At the end of the course you will have the knowledge to be able to set yourself up at home to continue your own Gelliprinting journey should you wish to.
I'll also recommend Gelliprint artists you can look up to enhance your study.
Gelliprinting is fast and fun and it's easy to get hooked, so having a good set of skills allows you to not only produce works which you love but also gives you skills to be able to continue exploring at your own pace.

Feedback from previous course participants:
'I had never done a gelliprinting course before and I really enjoyed it; over
the 5 weeks I became more confident with Julia’s wonderful teaching
style. It was lovely to get to know a bit about different artists that I had
never heard of. My class was full of friendly people and we had a lot of
fun and learned a lot,' Dawn.
'Julia is a knowledgeable and encouraging tutor. She offers well planned sessions with generous resources in a supportive environment', Fi.
'It was very helpful - Julia had visual examples demonstrating the various stages in the printmaking process in her sketch book as well as finished pieces. Julia also provided links for further information and research, also websites for purchasing resources,' Claire.
