My latest version is published below:

Creative Influences.

I asked Dad what creativity meant to him.

“It fulfils a need. It’s like an itch . . . it can be both relaxing and frustrating.”

Do you ever get that feeling that some of your childhood memories are not actual memories of events but you know about them because you’ve seen a photo instead?

However, I do have a very vivid memory from when I was about 5 years old – and I know I’ve not seen a photo of it . . . and it’s of my dad emerging from the garage of the house we lived in in Brixham, Devon.

He’s holding out a hobby horse that he’d made from cutting a horse head out of some wood and attaching it to a broomstick. He’d decorated the horse head with painted on features and wool for hair – at least that’s what’s in my memory. I think he made one for each of the three of us in time. And we loved these hobby horses as kids, running up and down the street pretending to ride them!

But what I love more about that memory is knowing how precious they were to us – even at that young age – because Dad had made them himself.

The memory was triggered recently when mum sent me this photo (below) of Dad experimenting with making his own paints from pigments . . . for years, when he was working and bringing up a family, he didn’t have the time or capacity to explore his creativity fully but since retiring he’s really got back into it again.

I’m convinced that my desire to create is in some large part influenced by seeing my dad make stuff by hand when we were children. Well, that and being encouraged to explore hands on pursuits ourselves too – for a lot of my childhood that was sewing, sometimes from kits which were often a little hard to do without lots of help from my mum, and sometimes just making stuff up inspired by something I might have seen.

My favourite school was the one we attended in Brixham where days were spent doing woodwork, crochet, dancing and projects. (No times tables or spelling for us!)

Encouraged by Dad, we also played music together as young children (not quite the von Trapps!) – and the house was full of music too – Ike and Tina Turner’s  ‘River deep mountain high’,  Rod Stewart’s early albums with his then band/ ‘Puff the magic dragon’ (interesting lyrics!) amongst others.

At one point, when we’d moved back to Bath, Dad made a darkroom in the basement of that house for developing black and white photos which we both enjoyed using – a pursuit I continued when I went to do my degree as they had a darkroom in the department.

I didn't like reading myself much as a child, but I loved being read to and mum often read to us when we were younger, and from that my imagination could run riot. To this day listening to audible books and podcasts when I’m in the studio is still one of my favourite ways to ‘read’.

More recently both of my folks have been willing guinea pigs ahead of running my first gelliprinting classes -  it became such a fun way to spend a rainy day when we were on holiday together - and being able to rehearse a class on two very different learners was invaluable.

These days it’s our shared joy of creative pursuits that fuels many of our phonecalls and visits to galleries with my folks is a regular family pursuit. They are both so open and curious  -  the quirkiness of the ZigZag gallery in Glastonbury was one of all of our favourites from last year’s Somerset Open Studios.

The last time they visited us in London (ahead of the big escape) we spent a day in Henry Moore’s studios - amazing place if you are ever within driving distance. For Dad, lots of clay sculpture work was inspired by this visit.

I count myself really blessed to not only have had these influences, but also to be able to share what I’m passionate about with those closest to me and for us all to derive so much joy from spending time in these pursuits together.

In other news:

I’m excited to be taking part in a local show, Handmade for the Holidays starting on November 15th - details as below.

This is the first time I’m showing my new abstracted landscape pieces I’ve been working on a while now. . . you might get a preview of them if you’re following me on Instagram*.

And I’m in good company - there are photographers, jewellery makers, ceramicists, printmakers and painters in the group of 14 of us showing.

I hope you can come and visit if local - we’re there every day from 9am- 6pm and I will be stewarding on both Saturday mornings and on the Wednesday morning too.

If you’re feeling festive there are 2 chances to come and make cards, decorations including garlands and wrapping paper - whatever you fancy and can do in the 3 hours!

***New this year is also tin embossing on the December 6th date. It’s lots of fun making decorations using the tin (which I have in copper, gold and silver colours) . . . and if festive things are not your bag come and create some lovely leaf shapes instead!

I’m also busy planning some courses for 2026 including Mixed Media Monthly classes (the best excuse to play with materials I could think of!), printing onto

I’m taking part in ***Faye Bridgwater’s ‘November squares’ on Instagram - you don’t have to have the tool she sells to take part - you could just draw different squares. I’m a little busy to be taking on anything new but as I had a little light bulb moment after the first prompt I did, I will be trying to find pockets of time where I can to join in! You can find all the info and prompts on her Insta account.

And finally a new book I’m enjoying - ‘The Art of Noticing’ by Rob Walker. It’s a book of 131 exercises in training your attention - so less time scrolling and more time enjoying my surroundings in new and varied ways - can’t wait to get stuck in!

fabric and much more.

With thanks for sharing this time with me.
