Starting in 2026 . . . a series of workshops on Saturday mornings - 1 per month - to explore mixed media art making.
Come one time to try it out or book a bunch of sessions.
IN MARCH our focus is on working larger, creating layered work along the length of a concertina book, which we'll make from thick paper, or across a whole large sheet to cut and fold into an artists zine.
We'll start by working bigger and looser along the length of the concertina, or across the whole large sheet, choosing a colour palette to inform our mark making; we'll then layer on further materials and marks, including collage and drawn marks from a wide range of materials.
We'll choose marks to highlight and others to quieten as we create focuses for different parts of our concertina; you might also choose to employ some Gelli-print stencils as a focus across the page/ concertina.
The books will be highly individual and a good opportunity to explore working bigger and in a different format. You might choose to have a theme for your page e.g. botanicals or asemic writing or abstract or other.
The images are showing a range of concertina books.
No previous art making experience is needed - just a dose of curiosity and a willingness to explore.
For artists, this practice is invaluable if you're keen to explore some new ways of making marks and or if you like to play with materials just for their own sake!

Comments from recent course participants (from the online mixed media course) :
‘Thank you, Julia, and thanks especially for sharing your process. I love the idea of using a specific type of ‘mark’ as a launch point throughout an entire sketchbook, and I’m looking forward to playing with the various techniques you shared again and again. Very useful and inspiring session!' Kerry
'Julia, I enjoyed your lesson! Your tips were beneficial and will help me loosen up within a structure. Thank you for sharing your ideas about how to make a composition look like it flows (not separate elements).' Sarah
'Thank you. I'm going to have another play this afternoon. It's very inspiring and just what I need to propel me into my creativity again,' Catherine.
'I haven't done much in sketchbooks, but I do like your idea of exploring a single shape to the fullest. This is worth working in a sketchbook to me!' Karen
